AFTER ALCATRAZ

14-John wanted.jpg

Despite an aggressive search by authorities, John Anglin, Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris were never seen again, and presumed drowned. At least that's the official conclusion drawn by the FBI. Yet, they continued a vigorous search for the escapees for years, including harassing the Anglin family, whom they were convinced knew where the three were hiding out. Both can't be true. Either the three died the night of June 11 or they survived.

Despite utilizing every resource available to them, the FBI never found the three escapees, and so closed the case in 1979. All the records and evidence they had collected over the years were turned over to the U.S. Marshals, which for them is still an open case.

Picking up the investigation where the authorities left off, we have taken an in-depth look at the evidence and come up with our own conclusions based on our research, which took us in some very surprising and unexpected directions.

For example, the Anglin family claims the brothers sent flowers on their mother's birthday until her death in 1973, and for several years beginning in 1962, Christmas cards. Were they sent by the brothers, or someone playing a hoax on the family?

One of the Christmas cards allegedly sent by John after the escape

Is this a photo of John and Clarence Anglin purportedly taken years after the escape provided by their childhood friend, Fred Brizzi, or did he trick the family? He was a known drug runner for Mickey Cohen and spent years in prison. Fred's wife also claims he never once mentioned seeing the brothers alive after their escape 1962. Who is lying and who is telling the truth?

But if this photo is authentic, then everything we know about the Alcatraz escape is wrong.

To find out the truth for ourselves, we participated in an episode of Expedition Unknown. Led by Josh Gates, we investigated every clue we could find, such as a lighter and 1951 Lincoln penny found on a remote mountain, along with the forensic analysis of the photo. The result of these and other examinations of the evidence over a period of years let us know the story didn't end on June 11, 1962, but had only just begun.
